Thor: Love and Thunder is a 2017 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is directed by Taika Waititi from a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Chris Yost and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum and Mark Ruffalo.

Marvel Studios’ Thor: Love and Thunder finds the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey, unlike anything he’s ever faced – a quest for inner peace. But Thor’s retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi), and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late. Directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) and produced by Kevin Feige and Brad Winderbaum, Thor: Love and Thunder opens in U.S. theaters on July 8, 2022.

Unlike Ragnarok, which was co-written by Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, and Christopher Yost, Waititi penned Love and Thunder’s script with some help from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Production began in Australia in January, with Tessa Thompson and Natalie Portman also reprising their earlier Thor roles as Valkyrie and Jane Foster, respectively.

Love and Thunder marks Chris Hemsworth’s fourth solo outing as Thor. That makes Thor the first MCU hero to make it past the four Avengers movies and his own standalone trilogy. Thankfully, Waititi sounds more than willing to spend some extra time with Marvel’s God of Thunder. “Thor: Love and Thunder” has enlisted Jennifer Kaytin Robinson to assist Oscar winner Taika Waititi update the script prior to its August production start, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.

And the “love” part of Thor: Love and Thunder is something that Waititi is digging into in this film. He explained that he really wanted to dig into the concept of love while keeping it a “cool movie” and something that would appeal to the fans that usually aren’t into that sort of thing. With a release date set for November 5, 2021, Thor: Love and Thunder is expected to be going into production in the second half of this year, which means that the next few months are prime time to get the story where it needs to be. Taika Waititi seems to be committed to completing Next Goal Wins – which has Searchlight Pictures as a distributor, but no set release date – before fully diving back into the world of Marvel filmmaking, and working with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson could provide him a necessary assist.

Also, anyone concerned about this possibly meaning that Thor: Love And Thunder won’t be as auteur-ish as Thor: Ragnarok need not be afraid. After all, Waititi wasn’t actually credited as a writer on the third Thor movie (those credits belonging to Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle, and Christopher L. Yost), but the director was still able to lend his personal sensibilities to the production via design, on-set improvisation, and a substantial presence during the editing process.

After the now-customary shifting of release dates that all Marvel projects endured in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Thor: Love and Thunder, originally meant for release last November, is currently set to bow on July 8, 2022. A third Thor film was confirmed in January 2014, when Kyle and Yost began work on the screenplay. The involvement of Hemsworth and Hiddleston was announced that October. Waititi joined the film as director a year later, after Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor chose not to return. Ruffalo joined the cast reprising the role of Hulk from previous MCU films, which allowed elements of the 2006 comic storyline “Planet Hulk” to be adapted for Ragnarok. The rest of the cast, including Blanchett as Hela, was confirmed in May 2016, with Pearson’s involvement revealed at the start of filming that July. Principal photography took place in Brisbane and Sydney, Australia, with the film also having exclusive use of Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford, concluding in October 2016.
